Rested and Refreshed:
As we walk along the beach to the village of San Jose, we take in the sights, hear the waves crashing, and feel the sand beneath our toes. We are refreshed from a long day of traveling and now have the energy to travel up to one of the prettiest views in town. Devin, an intern, was moved for us all to look out at God’s creation on this hill–reflect on the work that is being done below and remember the work that still needs to be done. The view was breathtaking and so was the response in prayer. With some of us not knowing what to expect on this trip and still driven by anxious thoughts, we opened ourselves up for God’s agenda. We gathered in a circle and each team member prayed for whatever was put on their hearts. The gentle breeze sweeping by our skin gave us goosebumps. But we know it was something far greater than just the wind–it was the presence of God.
Simplicity in a Soccer Tournament:
The vision to have a soccer tournament has been the interns’ since the beginning of the summer. It finally came to be this weekend! Villages came together to enjoy something they love and we watched as young men brought passion to the field. Today being our first day out on the field, the team was excited to put into practice our devotion this morning-FAITH EXPRESSING ITSELF THROUGH LOVE (Galatians 5:6, 1 Corinthians 13). The students cleaned up the soccer field then welcomed everyone upon arrival. Families trickled in bringing their children and showed excitement to be a part of something. Amongst the kids, there was the sound of laughter, exchange of smiles and coloring pages, and teaching new games. And the adults? They laughed as well, cheered on their team, and shared sandwiches and icecream cones. There was a ceremony held right after in which Carlos and Devin presented medals and even trophies. Pride and humility collided in perfect harmony as the teams lined up in front of us. Pride for the sport and each village, yet humility making room for friendship and giving thanks to God in prayer. With no distractions, social status, material temptations, electronics or excess, we learned an amazing lesson on the first day: thanking God, showing love, and enjoying the simple things in life with family and friends.
