What an honor and privilege it has been to witness first hand what God is doing in Guatemala. The Holy Spirit has been with us, guiding our prayers and journey in this country. It is evident that God has gone before us, preparing the ground work for our team to be here. We have had the opportunity to pray over families in the village, as well as all the Rinos on the JV and Varsity teams.
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit one of the Rinos homes. God broke my heart for Chuckie and his family. His mother had just returned from the fields, as she sells blackbeans to support her 5 kids. Her husband is absent, and when he is around he is abusive. They live in extreme poverty, barely making ends meet. We were graciously welcomed into their home and given about half the blackbeans she had obtained that day. God used this woman’s generosity to speak volumes to my heart
Afterwards, we headed to Allen’s dad, Candlerio’s house. Several years ago, God used a horrible accident (which paralyzed him) to bring him to the saving knowledge of Jesus. Since he lives in extreme poverty and without the ability to have extensive medical care, he was left dependent on his family to complete all functional tasks. Two years ago I had the opportunity to come to Guatemala on a short term trip. Two of my friends (one a PT and the other a nurse) and I were able to complete family training with Candlerio, to help him be more independent getting in and out of bed and into a chair. No one had ever told him he could learn to complete these tasks on his own. Candelerio remembered me and my friends, and he was very thankful for all the help we had given in. He is now independent with these functional tasks. What a blessing it was to be able to follow up with him and continue to encourage him.
