Today our team met together during lunch and had a time of reflection. A lot of things have happened these past two weeks, and as our time here in Rwanda comes to a close it was helpful to sit down and simply talk about what was on our minds.
Something that was on my mind during the meeting (and was also a topic that was also on the minds of many other team members) was how I thought going to Rwanda was going to be a mission trip.
To elaborate, my expectations towards this trip as I left America was that I was going to be entering into a completely broken and Godless country. And while this brokenness exists in numerous ways and I have seen the hurt that has been inflicted on the people here, I can’t help but see the extreme kindness of the people here. Simply walking down the sidewalk of Kigali can open way to a friendly smile and conversation with a person ready to hear the Gospel. That is only one example of the amazing attitude that the people in Rwanda exhibit. One of which is hard to find in America.
I say all of this to explain the one question that ran kept going through my mind: “Is Rwanda really the mission trip or is returning to America the real need for the gospel?”
Rwanda has been a fantastic opportunity for learning for the team and I am thankful for the lessons God has provided. Thank you for keeping updated with the teams progress and for your continued prayers!
We finished the day by serving at a youth rally put on by some of the local churches. We got the opportunity to lead two songs of worship, in which we had some of the church members ran on stage to dance with us. Alyssa shared her testimony with the congregation, and when the local churches lead worship, we were invited to dance on stage. It was fun and we just laughed as we danced Rwandan style. The youth rally will continue tomorrow, and we are so excited to see God change hearts and others accept Him for the first time.
